Police identify 80-year-old Bay City man shot to death on Interstate 75

BUENA VISTA TWP, MI — Police have identified an 80-year-old Bay City man and former teacher recently shot to death on Interstate 75.

At approximately 4:45 a.m. on Friday, May 17, John R. Strachan was driving a Chevrolet City Express van north on I-75 through Buena Vista Township when unknown assailants opened fire on him.

The van stopped near the Holland Road exit. Strachan suffered at least one gunshot wound, which proved fatal.

Police have not made any arrests as of Monday morning. They have said they believe Strachan was the target and not a victim of random violence.

Investigators have not revealed what leads them to believe Strachan was the target. Michigan State Police Lt. Kimberly Vetter said they are currently reviewing Strachan’s phone records and reviewing surveillance footage.

Vetter could not reveal what cargo was in Strachan’s van or where it was traveling to or from.

Strachan previously worked as a teacher in Bay City Public Schools, although his employment ended years ago, Superintendent Stephen C. Bigelow confirmed.

Police are asking anyone with information about Strachan’s murder to call them at 989-495-5555 or 248-514-3038. Tipsters can also remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-5245.

Strachan’s homicide is the 13th so far this year in Saginaw County. All but two were due to gunshots, while the other two involved vehicles.
