Storm repairs mean not all HISD schools will open Monday

Update 7:11 am Browning Elementary was scheduled to open this morning but remained closed due to a power outage.

Original story:

Thanks to extensive damage from the storm, not everyone has had their power restored and not all Houston ISD schools will be able to open Monday even though crews worked over the weekend to restore and make repairs after Thursday’s hurricane-force winds hit Houston, according to HISD.

Municipal courts will be closed on Monday; City libraries and community centers will also be closed, except for those identified as cooling centers. Authorities will close an area on Travis from McKinney to Polk as crews continue to clean up broken glass and other debris.

Centerpoint issued a map, noting when it expects to restore power to certain areas of the city. He acknowledged that with the team’s high temperatures this week, it is more important than ever for power to be restored.

Listed below are HISD schools that plan to be open and those that will close on Monday. HISD issued the following statement:

Any school that is not ready to serve students today at 9 pm will not open tomorrow, May 20. At those schools, HISD will provide food distributions for students only tomorrow from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Additionally, HISD has temporarily relaxed uniform and dress code policies for schools where students return to class on Monday. We know that many of our families and staff still do not have power and do not want students to stay home because they do not have access to laundry.

Finally, HISD understands that some families may be experiencing issues that prevent their students from attending school tomorrow. If you find yourself in this situation, please contact your child’s campus if possible to inform staff that your child will be absent. Staff members can also help you connect with any support needed.

The message sent at a school on Monday.

Additionally, since Herod Elementary School still did not have air conditioning as of 8 p.m. Sunday and may not open on Monday, plans for a protest at the school were moved to Wednesday at 7:15 a.m.

Parents, students and community members are protesting the firings of the principal, 11 teachers and at least one staff member. Critics say no justification was given for the layoffs, that the actions have had a negative impact on the school and the community, and are calling for an end to the state takeover of the district.

HISD released several lists of schools that would be open on Monday, juggling them throughout the day. Some of the schools they initially thought would be open will not be. This list was posted at 9:48 p.m.
