A total of 72 lifeguards have been recruited this year to safely staff the pools, and a further 70 applicants are currently in training.

The city said 26 of the community pools will open Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, May 25 through Monday, May 27. For the preseason, Saturday and Sunday, June 1 and 2, and for the regular season, Saturday, June 2. From June 8 to Sunday, August 4. The remaining three sites are scheduled to open June 29 during pool season.

“I am very happy to announce that more pools will be opening this summer and that there will be more lifeguards on duty,” said Mayor Donna Deegan. “This is due to the hard work of our Parks staff, who spent much of the last year repairing pools and hiring new employees.”

The city said Mayor Deegan prioritized increasing pool funding in the 2023-24 budget, including $1 million in the Capital Improvement Plan for pool maintenance and $25,000 for an innovative lifeguard campaign. Also included were pay increases from the $25 million task force funding approved in December.
