NH school district closed as police search for driver who hit police officer in Massachusetts – Boston 25 News

HINSDALE, NH — Local schools remained closed Wednesday as police continue to search for a driver who allegedly struck a police officer in Massachusetts, then drove to New Hampshire, crashed and left the vehicle near a school.

Police described the driver of the crash, Michael Martelle, as a white man of medium build and he was last seen wearing black shorts and no shirt.

Tuesday’s incident prompted a school to shelter in place and the school district remained closed Wednesday. All sporting events are also cancelled.

Boston 25 reached out to the Hinsdale School District for comment.

On Tuesday afternoon around 3:19 pm, local police were notified that a police officer had been struck by a motor vehicle in Warwick, Massachusetts, in a hit-and-run accident. The officer’s condition was not known Wednesday.

The vehicle, which drove away from the scene, was last seen heading west on Route 119 in New Hampshire toward Hinsdale, police said.

A Hinsdale police unit responded to the area of ​​Main Street and saw the vehicle, which sped away, police said.

A short time later, the vehicle crashed on Brattleboro Road, where both Martelle, the driver, and a female passenger fled on foot.

The passenger, later identified as Estrella Crespo, was arrested and charged with disobeying an officer, police said.

Martelle continued walking away. Police said it is unknown if he has a gun.

“Due to the proximity of the incident to the school, the school was notified and instructed to shelter in place,” police said in a Facebook post.

“We would like to recognize the Hinsdale School District’s quick response in taking appropriate measures to ensure the safety of staff and children who were still on school property during this incident,” police said.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 911 or Hinsdale police.
