Dozens of historic headstones destroyed in Adelaide cemetery

Police are investigating after dozens of historic headstones were found destroyed in an Adelaide cemetery.

Heartbroken relatives were shocked to find 31 tombstones broken and dumped at Happy Valley Cemetery on Saturday.

“It’s incredible to see the damage they’ve caused,” historian Steve Sawyer told 9News.

“This tombstone was knocked over and when it fell to the ground it broke into these parts.”

The cemetery, the oldest in Port Lincoln, is home to almost 3,000 graves of indigenous people, local pioneers and early settlers dating back to the 1840s.

“It’s very sad that this part of our history is being destroyed for no good reason,” Sawyer added.

The city council is trying to clean the cemetery and repair the tombstones.

Meanwhile, the police are working to hunt down those responsible for the vandalism.
