Anthony Davis trade proposal for major assets in case LeBron James leaves

Since winning the 2020 NBA title, the Los Angeles Lakers have gone through a rotating cast of coaches and staff surrounding All-Stars LeBron James and Anthony Davis. The team has had erratic success, having made it as far as the Western Conference Finals in 2023 and falling as low as the No. 11 seed in the West in 2021.

This season, Los Angeles split the difference, finishing with a 47-35 record and was bounced from the playoffs in a five-game first-round loss to the Denver Nuggets. Now, James has the opportunity to leave the team for what will likely be the last major contract of his career, should he opt out of his $51.4 million player option for 2024-25.

If he does, Bleacher Report’s Connor Thoms is convinced the team should consider moving on from Davis as well.

“Let’s say we find ourselves in a scenario where LeBron James leaves for some reason,” Thoms said (c/a Jonathan Adams of for the transcript). “LeBron James leaves the Lakers, let’s say he goes to play with Bronny, and suddenly the Lakers are entering a rebuild. Let’s take a look at Anthony Davis.

“I just want to take a look at what a trade for Anthony Davis would be like. It would have to include, I imagine, Dejounte Murray to give them someone they could probably turn to. Or you’d throw Clint Capela in here to make the money work. Or maybe (the Hawks) will even stick with Dejounte Murray and just add Bogdan Bogdanović instead.”

A deal for Murray by the Hawks, who own the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft, could be a great opportunity for the Lakers to gain greater draft equity, as well. Murray could also be moved multiple first-round draft picks. Bogdanović’s return would not be as complete for Los Angeles.
