Jacksonville librarians to judge second poetry contest

JACKSONVILLE, Texas (KETK) – The Jacksonville Public Library will hold its second poetry slam on Saturday, May 25 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The contest will pit poets against each other to win praise and prizes from librarians who will judge the planned poetic pugilism.

“All ages are welcome from fifth grade on up,” said Peter Hoheisel, former creative writing professor at Lon Morris College. “We will write a poem on the spot and the librarians will judge the works submitted to compete for prizes. I would especially like young people to come compete against their parents. Also, people who have never written a poem before are my ideal contestants because they have no preconceived notions about what a poem is, except that it is a set of rhyming words. “We had a lot of fun last year and we hope to make it an annual event.”

Potential poets are asked to provide their own pen. For more information, contact the library at 903-586-7664 or 903-530-7873.
